Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is the day of love and friendship. In Germany it has only been celebrated for a few years now.

The day goes back to Saint Valentine who is said to have lived in the Roman Empire of the 3rd century, and who was excuted, because he secretly held wedding ceremonies for young Christian couples. Practice of Christianity was a crime anyway, and above that the Roman social structure was undermined by the Christian marriages, because often there were people of different social classes (i.e. slaves and free born) getting married.

On Valentine's Day people give each other flowers, chocolates or other things. In Germany this is mainly done by those in love, friends do not usually give presents to each other on that day.
